Wild

It’s getting wild out there,

my mother says, watching as the wind lashes

like a creature sprung from its lair.

My mother’s eyes gleam and flare

behind the tea-steam fogging her glasses.

It’s getting wild out there.

She peers from the window into the dim glare

of tripping motion lights. A branch writhes past

like a creature loosed from its lair.

Hefting the window she feels the air

In the frigid inch between sill and sash

It’s getting wild out there.

We nest in blankets furled up to our hair.

The house howls in the turbulence, something crashes like a creature fleeing from its lair

We make more tea, we savor the scare

and the savagery. We cuddle, we nibble at our stash.

It’s getting wild out there

And we are creatures curled within our lair.
